How can I improve my brand's visibility in AI answers?
AI assistants that search the web read a handful of pages for each question and summarise them, so you get named when those pages mention you. Find the pages AI cites for your category questions and get included there (lists, reviews, comparisons, forums); publish pages on your own site that answer buyer questions directly; make your product pages easy to quote; keep your brand facts consistent everywhere; and make sure Google and Bing can crawl your site. Then measure the same questions every week.
How AI answers decide which brands to name
When ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity or Google's AI Overviews answer a current question, they usually search the web first, read a few pages, and write an answer from them. A brand that appears in those pages, described clearly, is likely to be named. A brand that isn't on those pages usually isn't named, however good the product is.
So improving AI visibility is mostly about two things: being on the pages AI reads, and being easy to quote when it reads your own pages.
The plan
- Measure first. Ask 20–30 buyer questions with web search on and record who is named and which websites are cited (see our guide on checking ChatGPT).
- Get onto the cited pages. For each frequently cited "best X" list, review site or comparison article, contact the author or publisher with a short, factual pitch. Make sure you have profiles on the review sites that appear (G2, Capterra and similar) and take part honestly in the forum threads that are cited, such as Reddit.
- Answer the questions on your own site. For each buyer question no one owns yet, publish a page that answers it in the first paragraph, then explains. AI tools quote clear, direct answers.
- Make product pages quotable. Say who the product is for and what problem it solves in the first lines; list features, specifications and prices in plain text; show real reviews.
- Keep brand facts consistent. Use the same name, description and website on your site, social profiles and directories, and link them together with Organization structured data.
- Be crawlable. Check that Google and Bing can index your pages (Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools); ChatGPT's search draws heavily on Bing's index.
- Re-measure every week with the same questions to see what moved.
What doesn't work
- Keyword stuffing or hidden text — AI summarises meaning, and search engines penalise it.
- Publishing many thin pages. One clear, useful answer beats ten near-duplicates.
- Spamming forums with links. Moderators remove it, and it can hurt your reputation in the answers you want to appear in.
How long it takes
Changes to pages AI reads live can show up in answers within days to weeks, once those pages are crawled again. Changes that depend on a model's training data take much longer. That is why live-search answers are the ones worth tracking when you want to see results.
Questions people also ask
Is this the same as SEO?
It overlaps: being indexed and well-structured helps both. The difference is that AI answers name only a few brands, and being mentioned on the third-party pages AI reads matters at least as much as your own ranking.
Do I need structured data?
It helps machines understand your brand and products (Organization, Product, FAQ). It doesn't replace being mentioned on the pages AI cites.
Where do I start if I have no time?
Find the three websites AI cites most for your category questions and get included on them. That usually moves more than anything you change on your own site.
